HERITAGE HOME TURNED RESTAURANT

SOMMERZ

The road along Northam Hotel now named Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah (formerly called Northam Road) was known as the “Millionaire’s Row” in the 1900’s. It housed all the big mansions of all the richest families in Penang. At the beginning of the road at the corner of Pangkor Road next to the presnt Gleneagles Hospital is “Hardwicke House*”, the oldest heritage building on that road. The 3 acre property, built at the turn of the 20th century, was originally owned by the Penang Club which then sold it in 1887 to Dr. WC Brown, a medical doctor from Harley Street. He named it “HARDWICK HOUSE” after “HARDWICK HALL” in Derbyshire, England.

“HARDWICK HALL” owned by the Duke of Devonshire, was built and designed for the Bess of Hardwick, who was at that time, after Queen Elizabeth, the most powerful and richest woman in England. Today it is an English heritage building managed by the National Trust. In 2006, it was selected by a BBC documentary as one of Britain’s Best Buildings. HARDWICK HALL was used as Malfoy Manor in the book and movie “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”.

In 1905, the house was sold to Khaw Sim Kong of the Raja of Ranong family of Southern Thailand (the most famous member of which is Khaw Sim Bee). During the 1st World War, the house was in turn sold to prominent lawyer Lim Cheng Ean who would later become a Legislative Councilor and the first Chinese magistrate of the Straits Settlement. The last owner occupant of the house was his 3rd son, Lim Kean Siew, a well-known Penang lawyer and social activist. It used to house horse stables and tennis courts.

Today it housed two restaurants, Heritage Coffee and Sommez Heritage Bistro. Walking into the premises was like walking down memories through time. It has a wonderful heritage ambience coupled with an inexpensive dinner over a glass of wine. The whole atmosphere was like during the colonial days where rich businessmen with cigars would frequent the place to seal a deal. It was great to be able to experience such great existence of our history today.

PENANG BLOGGERS MEET OUT AT GURNEY PLAZA – CSL SPICE MI700 DROIDPAD PREVIEW

Written by crizlai on Nov 20th, 2010 | Filed under: announcement, computer, review, technology

Recently, about 20 bloggers from Penang and Kedah were invited to CSL’s Spice MI700 DroidPad preview at Gurney Plaza, Penang. As Android has been the next state-of-the-art gadget in the market other than the Apple’s 10” iPad, all of us were very eager to learn more on what interesting features this 7” newly launched tablet has.

We were divided into two groups in order to get a more personalized preview and hands on experiences on the Spice MI700 DroidPad. This was followed by some feedback questionnaires by CSL and a quiz session to determine who has the most knowledge on the product. Eventually, all went home with some CSL souvenirs but one person was randomly selected to take home an extra item – a CSL Spice MI700 DroidPad worth RM1599. Well, two can change the life of a person. How true it was for our fellow blogger, Ms. Apple Tan (Mr. Steven Goh’s wife), who was pregnant at that time. That’s two, right? 😛 She emerged the lucky winner of the Android gadget with extra two black eyes on the existing two white eyes on the CSL mascot on the promotion brochure. Congrats Mrs. Goh! 🙂

Now let’s us study more in depth into the Spice MI700 DroidPad, a 7” tablet that runs on Android 2.2 Froyo, the latest mobile open platform developed by Google. It enables you work, play, shoot photos/videos/webcam/chat or even track your location with its in built GPS tracking device. It also supports a regular sized SIM card and is capable of supporting quadband networks such as EDGE, GSM, UMTS and HSDPA. It also has a WLAN 802.11 b/g. Measures at merely 179.4mm H x 110mm W x 11.5mm T and weighs at roughly 410gms, the tablet came with a long lasting 3240 mAh Li-Polymer battery. It’s equipped with Bluetooth V2.1 + EDR support, front facing VGA camera and and a back facing 3MP autofocus camera, which if by connecting to a Bluetooth headset, you would be able to make voice calls or video conferences right at your tip with ease. The Spice MI700 DroidPad is powered by Qualcomm MSM7227/600 MHz chipset with ROM/RAM of 512MB respectively and would be able to support a microSD card up to 32GB. You can check out the full specification at the CSL website.

I did a little time exploring more on the set but I would think I may need to spend more in the future to get accustomed to some of the features. Here are some of my feedbacks I can provide at the mean time.

1. The booting time is quite acceptable at almost less than a minute considering that not that many programs had been installed into the system yet.

2. The screen resolution is quite acceptable, provided you do not place the screen protector sticker, which eventually caused the colors to be slightly pale looking.

3. Scrolling, touching and swiping can be quite smooth with hardly any lagging although I did face some areas where my touches needed to have at least two inputs. I have no problems with the smartly spaced virtual keyboard.

4. As for games, it rocks all time. No lag at all so far.

5. Reading with its e-Book reader can be fun as the word size is just right for my vision. Page transition is without any haste too.

6. I have no problems viewing videos through YouTube or any other online video sites. I have yet to test out on the video player but I guessed I may have to download some players to test the system out soon.

7. I also do not have any problems checking out my emails as well as connecting to FaceBook or Google Talk. I have yet to test out on some of the FaceBook games.

8. Checking GPS reading from Google Maps was fine. I’ll check on the free one year MapKing GPS Navigation system once I get it activated soon.

9. With two speakers installed at both sides of the tablet, the sound of music through the music player is quite acceptable.

10. Browsing and switching websites is smooth flowing, except that I wonder why CSL missed out the feature of allowing FLASH related graphics to show up on the system. Hardware or software limitation?

11. The quality of photo shooting through its 3MP camera is quite acceptable, considering that you won’t really need such high quality photos to be posted online.

12. I have yet to test on the battery life but I guess all gadgets would not last more than a few hours if heavy usage.

13. The tablet’s pre-installed full version of Documents To Go is so cool. It allows you to read, create, edit, cut or paste Word, Excel, Powerpoint and PDF files so easily. I love this so much.

14. As for the pre-installed applications, I felt that some of them such as the Islamic features is not relevant to some of our needs. It would be best if it were to be placed in the Market for those who need to download them. It gets rather cluttered and messy with so many things on the screen. Well, that’s my personal opinion here.

15. Although the tablet might be convenient and light weight to carry around, the price is still too steep at RM1599 (~USD500). Even a NetBook is cheaper than the tablet easily. I personally felt that a price range of between RM1.1K and RM1.3K would be more attractive to capture the market share.

NEW BORN CHILD AS THE STAR

Written by crizlai on Jan 11th, 2010 | Filed under: announcement, family, life, Photography, product, rant

Having a newly born child in a family would surely be the pride to any parents. Don’t you think you should make your child into a star by letting the whole world know about his or her arrival? I have seen many ways people had done to bring the arrival announcement to the peak. Some would compile all the nice memories into a scrapbook and show it to everyone. Another would be by producing the best shot in their album and producing it into photos to be attached to handmade announcement cards.

These methods would be great ideas to be personal but not many people have the time to deal with the time consuming task with a hectic work life. Why don’t you leave it to the experts to handle all your birth announcements need while you spend more time rejoicing with your family?

I have received many of these cards over the years and I found them to be of great memories. I even had all of them kept inside one of my scrapbook sections. Browsing through the scrapbook recently, I found some of the child in the cards had grown up to be fine gentlemen and ladies. Wow! Time really flies! If I had any more children, I would surely send out more cards to make them into stars, not only one time but stars forever in anyone’s memories.

EVERBODY JUST LOVE SALES

BUYSALES

Well, I won’t deny that I’m also a sales addict. LOL! Each time when there’s an ongoing sale, regardless of which seasons, I would surely be one of the first few to jump in to have a look at what bargain I could get. Of course, that would be the online sales sites such as eBay, Amazon, Buy and many other wonderful websites as I somehow have the phobia in “fighting” with others when grabbing items in a real sale. Moreover, you can imagine the condition of the sale items with scratches from all the handlings.

I personally felt that I prefer online sales more than anything else although it might take a longer period to reach my hands. However, with my hectic working schedules it indeed save a lot of time and money. All I need to do is to hook up the internet, browse whatever I want to get and make the necessary payment through a few clicks. It’s just that simple. The rest would be the waiting time for the items to arrive at my doorsteps.

There are many online shopping malls around that have the features for bargainers of all budgets. Most items on sale would have items labeled clearly as brand new or used conditions. That would surely be great for many who love to own something with their money constraints. Hmm… There are some remarkable sales going on in Buy now. Anybody want to join me with some great bargain now?

WHERE IS THE PARTY?

Written by crizlai on Jul 19th, 2008 | Filed under: announcement, cards, costume, life, party, rant

Who would believe that I had received so many invitations for Halloween although the date will only fall on 31 October this year? Well, I do not mind too. At least I have more time to create my own costume for the function. The last party I went to was rather disastrous as I had not prepared any proper costumes. I had to attend the function as a masked Superman. I thought it would be great to have some great fun there by wearing a red underwear instead but that made me the laughing stock amongst my friends.

Although I did win the Most Comical and Daring Award for the night, I would not want to face that sort of embarrassment all over again. This year, I am planning to hold a Halloween party right over my house. It may be three months before the date but this would give my guests ample time to come out with their costumes. I just can’t wait to send out the Halloween invitations as I would like to see who else would be as daring as me in coming out with a special and out of the world costumes this year. Hmmm… I wonder if someone would paint himself green with super tight shorts and come in as the Incredible Hulk. Well, I would just have to wait to check them out. Gosh! The suspense is killing me now.
